Drive By Caroling...

What does a crazed family do when the ADHD is taking over the house on the day before Christmas eve? You channel that energy how ever you can. We decided that everyone needed a change of scenery yesterday afternoon. I had threatened to throw one of the kids' presents out in the snow. Yet another red flag that maybe we needed a chance of direction. We went bowling, had a great time. On the way home, as we drove past gas stations and drug stores, we rolled down the windows in the van and sang Christmas Carols to those standing in the cold. You should have seen the looks! We had a great time!
Our drive by Caroling lightened the mood--we certainly were at the point that if we didn't start laughing about something, we would be crying. Just what we needed about then..
And now it is Christmas Eve day at 6:30am. Kaden, the king of ADHD around here began his morning at 3:30 am. He has consumed 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, an industrial size barrel of cheese balls and anything he could get his hands on to drink. He has poured a whole bottle of shampoo on his head and emptied the last bottle of shampoo in the house down the sink. He has now had a very long shower to try and get rid of all the shampoo. He hates showers and baths and so he screamed at the top of his lungs through the whole ordeal. Even Aaron who is completely deaf was wide awake after that version of "singing" in the shower.
We tried to pin him in our bed for an hour or so this morning to keep him contained. I guess I know what it feels like to sleep on one of those vibrating beds you see in sleazy hotels featured in old TV sitcoms. Although getting kicked in the head and every other body part by a wild child saying "I can't take it anymore!" is usually not a part of this scenario...Maybe my life is more like a reality show than a sitcom.
With all the sleepless hours we get, I find myself filling the time dreaming up absolutely hysterical public service announcements we could create to warn the general public why heroin and pregnancy don't mix. Some of my ideas are quite funny and I am quite sure if I told you about them out loud, you wonder how sick my mind has become! Yet another way I cope with the despair that can overtake us parents who watch our children suffer from insanities such at this. Again, If you can't laugh about it sometimes in safe company, you are gonna cry...
I know it is only 7am, but I think we will try the caroling idea again!

2 Kind Words:

  1. I'm a friend online of Dorothy's and the honesty of your posts has encouraged me these past 2 days!!! Glad I'm not the only one who feels like I might lose my mind right now! Praying for you this morning :) :)

  2. Heather found you! Love her to pieces! So which one of us is going to write the post on the 'day after Christmas hang-over.' It's almost as bad as all the FASD/ADHD stress before the holiday - that huge weeping blankfaced crash that is the 26th for our kiddos. Thanks for the cute outfits. I'm taking Isaac to see grandma for a few days after church tomorow and he will wear the newborn one for sure!
