Our kids are so funny...even if they don't know it! McKenna says the funniest things. As you may know, kids who have significant cognitive impairments have difficulty with abstract thinking. McKenna takes everything literally--don't tell her you are are so mad that "steam is going to come out of your ears" or please don't mention that it's going to rain like "cats and dogs." We will never hear the end of it.
This morning, McKenna took a shower almost completely by herself--a goal we have had for her for a long time. She was very proud of herself and she was sure that everyone would notice that she had done this as soon as they saw her. I was trying to explain to her that not everyone would be able to notice right away that she took her shower all by herself because she always takes a shower--just not by herself. When Mark saw her, he didn't "notice" upon looking at her that she had accomplished such a great thing and she was mad. She went into her room, sat on her bed and I heard her saying repeatedly and with lots of anger, "If he doesn't notice pretty soon, I am going to snap!" About a minute later, I heard a "snap." She indeed had snapped.... her fingers... and that was it. She recovered and was happy again. Don't you wish that if you felt like "snapping", a little snap of the fingers would take of the situation? It works for Kenna. You just gotta love her....
