Being Black...

My friend Dorothy (http://www.urbanservant.blogspot.com/) is one of the most gifted writers and amazing people I know. Her entry today (one she wrote awhile back) touched my heart so completely...it is the words I want my kids to hear about this subject yet I have not found the words to say it. These are her words that come from her heart and have completely touched mine.

What Can I Teach you about being black?

Not much,
Because I'm not.
But I can teach you about pain,
And how to forgive peoples foolish words.
I can show you how to endure suffering,
So that through it Truth will be proclaimed.
I can love you and cry with you,
I can be the she-bear when you are threatened.
We can live where there is a rainbow of people,
and we can learn to love them together.
We can seek out the truth of history,
And not be afraid of the ugliness.
I can open your heart and your eyes
To the painful reality that comes clinging to the back of sin.
And in the end,I can release you into your destiny,
And wait for you to come home,
With a fuller understanding of who you are
and what you are to be in your life.
Then I can listen as you teach me,
What it means to be Black.

25 things about my husband...

So, if you hang out on facebook, you know all about the "25 random things" lists that people are making. You probably have been tagged. I like what someone said about those lists...buy me a beer and hang out with me for an evening and you are bound to learn all sorts of random things about me. Okay, so I don't drink, but a diet coke would do in my case...
How easy it is to take for granted that which is most important to you...and I am so guilty of that. Here are 25 random things that I love about my husband....

  • 1. He is kind and compassionate. If you have met him, you know that already...
  • 2. He is smart.
  • 3. He chooses service to others over his own comfort. Every day..
  • 4. He is one of the most giving people I know...of his time, talents and resources...
  • 5. He is spontaneous. He has been known to wake kids up at midnight and bring them out for pancakes at IHOP.
  • 6. He has a spirit of joy that he shares freely.
  • 7. He has a deep love for Jesus Christ and leads his family to become more like Him..
  • 8. He HATES needles and yet gives Elijah shots every other day.
  • 9. He loves to travel.
  • 10. He loves to spend times with his kids.
  • 11. He loves to take the kids individually on mini vacations..(He and Tyler are heading to Washington D.C. next week.)
  • 12. He always put me first above his own needs...
  • 13. He has a passion for those with disabilities, the elderly and the sick.
  • 14. He used to work in the car business and he can identify pretty much any make and model of vehicle out there.
  • 15. He would adopt 20 kids if he could!
  • 16. He never sits down...
  • 17. He has no idea what a "facebook" is.
  • 18. He loves his Church.
  • 19. He has the worst looking socks of anyone I know...and his shoes aren't much better...and he doesn't care.
  • 20. He loves his family..and is such a great Dad..
  • 21. He is not fond of the snow and cold.
  • 22. He is my best friend.
  • 23. He is dependable even if he runs a little late...
  • 24. He is not afraid to take all 8 kids to the Children's Museum or anywhere else. I have learned to never ask who he lost in the process..I just ask if he came home with the same number of kids that he started with..
  • 25. Without him, we could never be living this incredible life. He is the best thing that has ever happened to me and I am so thankful that God knew exactly what I needed when he put us together.

When I started this list, I wasn't sure if I could think of 25 different things...and now I am finding myself wanted to add about 25 more. Lucky me to have been blessed to have him as my own.
