I am a bargain shopper and I think I think I am pretty good at it. Here are a few tips: Don't assume that "sale" or "clearance" means anything. Amateurs would get excited to find things on clearance. Not me. It has to be 75% off for me to get excited. If something is a really good deal and I know I will be using it for sure (dishwasher soap, laundry supplies etc...) I buy it up. I watch for clearance at Sam's Club and Costco--not a task you can do with all the kids with because it does take looking closely up and down the aisles for REALLY good deals. I purchased the giant size Dawn dish washing liquid for 23 cents a piece-I bought them all up. I found beautiful comforter sets with pillows regularly $80 for $10 a piece. They were on clearance because the ribbon that tied them all together was undone..just down the aisle you could purchase the same thing with the ribbon tied nicely for full price.
My home is filled with things we have found on clearance. Our fridge, stove, and microwave are all scratch and dent finds. The fridge we just purchased has quite a few dents. We decided that starting out with dents in our stuff frees us from the stress that the kids are going to damage something that was "brand new." We can let go of the grip of perfection this way. Even our car is a scratch and dent (hail damaged) find!
Yesterday, the boys needed jeans. I happened to go into Old Navy with my sisters as they were marking down the clearance. I got the jeans I needed on sale and on clearance plus tons of great shirts for next school year for $1.97 a piece! With so many kids (and mostly boys) I never have to worry that the size won't be right--there is always someone to grow into it.
There are definitely times when I buy something that is unnecessary because if was such a great deal. I have those "what was I thinking?" moments. On those occassions, I can almost always think of someone who could use those items and I love to be able to pass on the item....
We really could not afford all of these kids if we did not learn how to shop carefully. With Aldi, and the dollar store, along with clearance shopping--Target is my favorite for clearance shopping--especially in groceries...freezer department--they mark down frozen items drastically when they need the space.
I really cringe when I have to pay full price for something...I love finding something that is a great deal!
I am so thankful that God provides for our family in this way. I am always amazed at His provision for our family
